Thanks Sarah Palin!

In Brain, Dopamine, Dumb Things, Humor, Politics, Science by DC McGuireLeave a Comment

Humor doesn’t just tickle the funny bone. Our guffaws and yuks also ramp up the dopamine sources in our brains.  When Palin, a politician with a bachelor’s degree in communications, claims to be “as much of a scientist as Bill Nye”, with a degree in mechanical engineering,  who did innovative engineering for Boeing , is one of the developers of The Planetary Society’s remarkable solar sail technology, and has spent decades working in science advocacy and education, all we can do is enjoy a hardy laugh.

HOW CAN WE REDUCE GUN-RELATED TRAGEDIES?

In Brain, Bullying, Conflict, Dumb Things, Media, Politics, Social Issues, Terrorism, Violence by DC McGuire1 Comment

by Donna-Christine McGuire Violence occurs at a shocking rate in the United States. The San Bernardino tragedy was the second mass shooting in one day, and the 355th in 2015. In a given year, 32,000 U.S. children will die from gunfire-related deaths: more than will die from cancer, pneumonia, influenza, asthma, and HIV/AIDS combined.

By Donna-Christine (D.C.) McGuire There is one Jekyll and Hyde brain chemical that if understood and used intentionally could dramatically improve life on this planet, for everyone. In the dark about dopamine? It’s an opioid cousin of cocaine and amphetamines, and with similar addictive rewards.

Chilling, historically true, and way too familiar, Goering’s strategy has been imposed on the masses forever. Finally humanity has an epic alternative for ending the devastation of armed conflict. Neuroscience has discovered that fear is rewarded with the naturally occurring, brain chemical, dopamine, and that we humans have a predisposition to dopamine addiction.

INSIDE THE BRAIN OF A SHOOTER

Whenever we act against our own best interests and hear ourselves wondering, “Why did I do that?” we were likely feeling the dumbing-down effects of dopamine overload. In the heat of highly-charged moments, blood and oxygen are selectively diverted away from the thinking Human Brain and directed to the instinctive Animal Brain.

WHY WE’RE ADDICTED TO OVEREATING, WORRY, DEVICES, MUSIC, and SO MANY OTHER TEMPTATIONS! by D.C. McGuire

We love music for much the same reason we can be drawn to sex, drugs, worrying, gambling, video gaming, and fatty, sugary food. All, to differing degrees, cause our brains to release dopamine, a naturally occurring neurochemical, capable of addicting us to its pleasures.

Media news, 24/7 of the worst of the worst, Ebola, ISIS, the environment, politics, business, healthcare, jobs, inequality, violence and terrorism, has put global enthusiasm for life on hold. Humanity is suffering from an epidemic of depression.

Barraged by unrelenting cable television and on-line news sources, the public is vulnerable to sinking beneath the enormity of media-hyped crises, buying into an imagined belief in their own individual powerlessness.

MENTAL HEALTH AND GUN CONTROL NOT ENOUGH TO STOP VIOLENT BEHAVIOR

In Control, Dopamine, Dumb Things, Media, Media Violence, Parenting, Uncategorized, Video Gaming, Wellbeing by DC McGuireLeave a Comment

No amount of mental health care and gun control can stop violence in a population of children trained by hours of media to see violence as a way of life. First person shooter games are turning out young killers whose brains and motor skills are wired for stalking and killing.

I was just told a horrific story, which would be absolutely unbelievable except that I heard it first hand, from a well-educated woman, with a successful career, and a child she loves very much.

Her seventeen-year-old son is failing in school and at life because his time is spent  absorbed by video gaming.

The vector of development our species has followed to this point is exhausted. Thinking and behavior that propelled humanity out of caves, into tribes with, livestock, crops, into villages with guilds and governments, and finally into nations, with opportunities to learn, grown and express our potential, has hit a wall.
