A team led by Harvard-affiliated researchers has found that in an eight-week mindfulness meditation program (30 minutes per day) novice meditators make measurable, structural changes in their brains. Brain scans document that over time, meditation produces changes in gray matter, specifically a thickening in the cerebral cortex in areas associated with attention, learning, memory processes, emotional regulation, self-awareness, and perspective taking.

Dr. Louise Arseneault’s group from King’s College London has discovered that being bullied can actually lead to a wide range of epigenetically induced mental health problems like depression and anxiety. In twin studies they observed that the bullied twin showed a decreased cortisol response.Decreased cortisol responses have  been linked to poor stress coping strategies and play a role in a number of  mental disorders.

I was just told a horrific story, which would be absolutely unbelievable except that I heard it first hand, from a well-educated woman, with a successful career, and a child she loves very much.

Drinking more than four sweetened beverages a day is definitely not great for your waistline, but it also might not be good for your mood.

A new study by the U.S. National Institutes of Health finds that fruit and soft drink drinkers are more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who didn’t regularly drink sweetened beverages.

Conservative friends describe Obama’s policies and personal traits as terrifying.  Their e-mails are angry and rancorous, predicting inevitable financial and moral ruin of the country, the loss of our dominance world-wide, and an urgency about taking back the “real” America.
